DOI : 10.5146/jcpath.2020.66 Aim: Diffuse pulmonary ossification is a rare chronic progressive disease characterized by metaplastic ossification in the lung parenchyma. There are two forms, nodular and dendriform.
Case: Our case was a 73-year-old male patient who presented with dyspnea. Thorax computed tomography revealed bilateral micronodules in lower lobes which are more prominent on the left side. The patient underwent left lower lobe wedge resection for suspected malignancy. In histopathological examination, branching, irregular, cylindrical tubules of bone structures infiltrating the lung parenchyma which are usually containing bone marrow and fibrotic areas surrounding these bone spicules were observed. Therefore the case was diagnosed as "Dendriform pulmonary ossification".
Conclusion: Dendriform pulmonary ossification is a rare condition, usually diagnosed in surgical specimens or postmortem examination, which is characterized by bone tissue infiltrating the lung parenchyma. In conclusion, the pathologist should keep in mind in the differential diagnosis of suspected malignancy particularly due to multiple nodules in the lower lobes.
