Impact of Clinical Information on Histopathological Diagnosis? Serie of Nine Cases

DOI : 10.5146/jcpath.2026.696 Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of clinical information on the pathological diagnostic process using educational cases involving various organs and systems, and to highlight the decisive role of clinicopathological correlation in achieving accurate diagnoses. Material and Methods: The study was based on a retrospective evaluation of cases submitted to the competition titled “What Is the Use of Clinical Information in Pathology?”, organized by the Resident and Young Specialist Commission of the Federation of Pathology Societies as part of the 34th National Pathology Congress. A total of 46 cases from various centers were evaluated; following a jury review based on predefined criteria, the 10 highest-scoring cases were selected for the final round. Of these, 7 were delivered as oral presentations at the congress. In the present study, selected cases that most clearly demonstrated the impact of clinical information on the diagnostic workflow were analyzed. Results: Nine cases demonstrated that the absence or delayed provision of clinical history led to diagnostic delays, broad and unstructured immunohistochemical panels, incorrect preliminary diagnoses, and inappropriate initial therapeutic approaches in some cases. Conversely, the integration of clinical data shifted the diagnostic approach and facilitated reaching the correct final diagnosis. Conclusion: Clinical information is an integral component of the pathological diagnostic process. Strengthening the clinicopathological correlation plays a critical role not only in improving diagnostic accuracy but also in preventing unnecessary testing and erroneous treatment approaches.
